More compact than simply plonking a dryer on top of a washer, WashTowers and laundry centres are also more energy efficient than using a single washer dryer combo, in that they incorporate a heat pump dryer.
They are also more aesthetically pleasing, boasting sleek and stylish designs in both dark colours and traditional white - and a forest green and beige combo Tower, if you prefer.
While both appliances complement each other in looks, the other advantage is the compatibility of features and smart settings that make doing the laundry less of a chore. Really, the only manual work involved is loading, unloading and transferring clothes from the washer into the dryer.
Always accessible
The LG WashTower and Haier Laundry Centre each have a single control panel - in the middle and on top, respectively - that provides easy access to settings. They also stand at an average height of around 1.5m, for optimum accessibility to the washer/dryer drums and detergent dispenser, with little bending and stretching required.
Drum size
Both have generously sized drums to handle the family laundry load. Capacity can range from 12kg up to 17kg for the washer, and 9-10kg for the dryer, depending on the brand.
Smart control
Smart pairing of the washer and dryer enables them to ‘talk’ to each other – the dryer can ‘read’ the load being washed and set the optimum drying cycle, and preheat the drum in preparation.
Companion apps such as LG’s ThinQ and Haier’s SmartHQ let you start and stop the wash and drying cycles remotely from a phone, receive alerts when the cycles are complete, schedule cycles for off-peak times, and download wash cycles and software updates.
Save power, save money
A WashTower and laundry centre won’t just save you time and space; they can also reduce your energy bills.
Despite spacious drum sizes, both appliances have high star ratings for energy efficiency – up to ten for the heat pump dryers and five for the washers. The dryers can also recycle water extracted during the drying process to clean the condenser units.
LG WWT-1209B 12kg WashTower
This tower of power comprises a 12kg direct drive front-loading washer and a 9kg heat pump dryer boasting five and nine star energy ratings, respectively.
Available in black steel or a forest green and beige combo, the WashTower has a 1400 RPM max spin speed and a suite of features that includes intelligent fabric care for the optimal wash, TurboClean 360 for a fast 39-minute wash, and an Allergy Care steam setting to banish any nasties.
And you can control it all from the convenient central panel, or remotely using the ThinQ smartphone app.
Haier HLC1290CTB1 Laundry Centre
Comprising a roomy 12kg washer and 9kg heat pump dryer, this all-in-one laundry centre stands at a comfortable height of 1.5m, with an intuitive LED control panel on the top for easy access to programs. Alternatively, you can connect to the SmartHQ app for remote control.
The dryer drum can be preheated 15 minutes prior to the wash cycle ending for fast switching, while Auto Dosing dispenses the correct level of detergent based on the wash cycle, and the dual Steam Deodorise and Refresh functions will freshen up clothes and reduce wrinkles.
And if you’re in a hurry, there’s a Speed Up function to shorten most cycles and Express 15 Cycle for one or two garments.
