Attention, class! School of Rock turns 20

There's nothing like a 20th anniversary of a favourite movie to make us feel old, and Richard Linklater's cult classic has just served a mortal reminder of time's ticking clock.

Bursting onto the scene from out of nowhere, School of Rock struck a chord with children and adults alike and continues to wow generations under the alarming banner of 'classic'. With its iconic metal rock soundtrack, combined with the elementary classroom setting, it was like a gift from the rock gods.

Linklater had made a name for himself following his cult indie films Dazed and Confused (1993) and Before Sunrise (1995), and screenwriter Mike White was riding a wave of success following Orange County (2002) and The Good Girl (2002). And with Jack Black's star rapidly rising after High Fidelity (2000) and Shallow Hal (2001), the planets aligned for what is arguably a highlight of the noughties.
