Oscar-winning animator Adam Elliot's complete works are now on Blu-ray
Showcasing the wonky work of Australia’s beloved claymation animator, 'The Adam Elliot Collection' features all his films on Blu-ray for the first time.
From his Oscar-winning short film Harvie Krumpet, this definitive collection includes Elliot’s two acclaimed feature films, Mary and Max and latest Oscar-nominated Memoir of a Snail, plus his earliest short films and clips for the first time on disc: all this and a 56-page booklet and six art cards!
While much animation is dismissed as being for children, the Melbourne-based Victorian College of the Arts graduate has always approached his work with an adult sensibility - crafting tragicomedies with mature themes.
His collection of films explores themes of loneliness, disability, heartbreak, mental health, and the struggles of ordinary people, all while maintaining a distinctly dry humour that makes his work so uniquely relatable.
Here are some fun facts to ponder:
- Elliot’s work has attracted Australia’s most popular stars, his films featuring the voices of Toni Collette, Geoffrey Rush, Eric Bana, Jacki Weaver, Sarah Snook, Nick Cave, Barry Humphries, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
- He calls his films Clayographies, clay-animated biographies based on the bittersweet lives of his family and friends, including his eight uncles. Highly narrative-driven, his films have a distinct, textured look because everything is made with clay and crafted with incredible detail. No CGI here - just pure artistry!
- His films have been seen by millions of people around the world, participating in over a thousand film festivals and winning over 110 awards, including the 2004 Oscar for his short, Harvie Krumpet.
- Striking a fine balance between humour and hardship is key to Elliot’s storytelling style. While he refuses to sugarcoat life’s struggles, his conversational tone prevents the films from feeling overly bleak.
Instead, they feel real and relatable, capturing the absurdity of everyday life. His characters may be outcasts or underdogs, but their stories are told with warmth and wit, making them feel endearing rather than pitiful.
