It's Wray Day! Mia Wray releases her long-awaited debut album

It’s a great title for a debut album, too: 'Hi, It’s Nice to Meet Me'.

“The only other title that was on my mind was ‘For the First Time in a Long Time’,” reveals Mia Wray, “which I still think is beautiful and may be a song one day.”

The Melbourne-based artist was one of the last acts that Michael Gudinski championed before the music mogul sadly died in 2021. The album follows a series of singles, which earned Wray some high-profile fans, including Sir Elton John.

The music legend has played Wray’s songs on his Rocket Hour radio show. When he gave Monster Brain a spin, he declared: “This is a wonderful song. I hope we can have her on the show and interview her because I’m really impressed with her.”

Wray says her debut album has been a journey of self-discovery. So, what are the main things she has learned during the creation of the record?

“I’ve learnt that I’ve only touched on the tip of the iceberg in my ‘self-discovery’. I think there is a lot yet to be unlocked and I’m so excited to promote that and encourage others to look for all of the beautiful things within themselves that are yet to be noticed.”

Wray wrote the almost title track, Nice to Meet Me, with G Flip.

“The things that I have specifically noticed about myself is that my sexuality is a rainbow and always has been,” Wray adds. “Also, my gut is my boss, and I’m extremely sensitive.

“I’ve learnt how much I need good people around me to survive the music industry and keep swimming. I struggle to be my own boss and have deep insecurities. I struggle with body image, and I think that may have been from an incident that happened a few years ago… anyway, the list goes on!”

Hi, It’s Nice to Meet Me is a powerful and revealing collection of songs. As our STACK review stated, “Australian pop has a vital new voice.”

“I think it’s important that yes, while this album started with it being about my sexuality, it isn’t only about that,” Mia Wray points out.

“It’s about so much more.”
