Make those everyday chores smarter
When we think about smart homes, it's often cool stuff like entertainment and lighting that comes to mind. But the beauty of smart tech is that it can also help us out with some of the less appealing aspects of keeping a household ticking nicely along.
Smart laundry
Smart home tech has revolutionised and simplified the mundane task of doing the laundry, as well as increasing energy efficiency. Washing machines and dryers are among the many everyday household appliances that can connect to an ecosystem for control via an app and voice assistants.
Smart washers can determine load types, dispense the right amount of detergent and softener, and set the optimal cycle, which can be started remotely from your phone. Those equipped with AI will learn frequently used settings, allowing you to easily schedule wash cycles according to the load.
Smart dryers have inbuilt sensors that weigh a load, detect fabric types in order to apply the correct heat setting, and measure humidity and temperature to prevent the clothes overheating.
Top tip: Smart connectivity lets you pair a compatible washer and dryer; washer load detection tech will automatically assign the correct drying cycle.
Smart fridges
When it comes to household essentials, refrigeration is at the top of the list.
Smart fridges can alert you if the door is left open, and inbuilt cameras let you check the contents on your phone while in the supermarket aisle.
Some models can even tag contents by use-by dates, generate an in-app shopping list for items that are about to expire or are running low, and offer recipe suggestions based on the contents.
Smart displays can turn the fridge into a central home hub for the family, with web browsing and media streaming, and reveal what’s inside the fridge without having to open the door, keeping chilled air in and your power bill low.
Top tip: Check capacity in litres to get the right size. Ideally, 200-400L suits two people, 400-600L for a family or four, and 600-800L for five or more.
Robot vacuums
Home robotic vacuums are doddle to set up via a smartphone app, and most can also be controlled by Google Assistant and Alexa, making cleaning the house as simple as commanding, “Hey Google, start vacuum”.
Robovacs merrily do their job and return to their base to recharge for the next run. Just pop the top to empty the dust catcher – or look for a model with an auto-emptying station.
Different models offer varying levels of navigational skill, often using laser mapping for the most efficient cleaning route. Their rounded designs enable them to gently bounce off objects – or even navigate around them – without causing any damage.
Top tip: Robot vacuums are generally much quieter than standard vacuum cleaners – your family will put their feet up and thank you.
