Domino Soundtracks is excited to announce its first release, 'Rat Film' by Dan Deacon, the original soundtrack to the documentary film of the same name, directed by Theo Anthony.
A portrait of Baltimore as a laboratory for both rodent and human populations alike, Rat Film is an acerbic, seductive and hugely inventive documentary that explores the American city's 'rat problem' into a powerful and poetic tale of urban, social and racial inequalities.
'Rat Film' finds Dan Deacon, the composer, on full display, with his usual maximalist production stripped back to its core electro-acoustic parts and instruments. In classic Dan fashion, he found a way to have the film's subjects contribute to the score too: "I thought it would be interesting to set up a group of theremins to be controlled by rats moving around an enclosure (the volumes and pitches would always be fluctuating based on where/how the rats moved). Using the data and patterns collected from the rat Theremin performance, as well as impulse data from recordings of rat brain activity, I began to compose the bulk of the score."
Domino Soundtracks is a new imprint to provide a specific home to, and increased exposure for, work that can often be over-looked once the end credits have rolled.
