Need a mouse and keyboard? Here's what you need to know

The humble ball mouse has evolved considerably since point-and-click tech revolutionised the computer. Meanwhile, the keyboard takes a daily pounding, so it needs to be robust, yet offer comfort for prolonged use. Which of each is best for you?

Mice

Wired or wireless?

Ultimately, it’s a personal choice. A wired mouse is reliable, plugs directly into a USB port, and doesn’t require charging or a software download to install. However, they can be limiting if space is at a premium.

Wireless mice have the unplugged advantage of Bluetooth connectivity, or an infrared radio receiver dongle connected to a USB port, so they enjoy freedom of movement. It’s important to keep them charged, though, or have the right batteries at hand if they run dry.

Movement

Optical and laser technology have made mice more versatile, with the latter operating on most surfaces even if you don’t have a mouse mat. DPI stands for dots per inch, which measures the mouse's sensitivity. The greater the number, the faster the cursor will move on the screen.

Comfort concerns

When you use a mouse for long periods, you’ll want a design that’s kind to your wrist. The upright handshake grip of an ergonomic mouse takes the pressure off, ensuring smooth and comfortable operation. And you can always add a mouse wrist rest to keep your arm level and help avoid RSI issues.

Game on!

Gaming mice possess subtle differences from regular mice, including additional buttons. But the main advantage for gamers – and everyday mouse users – is that they're more sensitive and responsive, with a high DPI and designed for comfort.

A gaming mouse is a win-win solution for work and play if you’ve got an ardent after-school gamer in the house.

Keyboards

Also a useful add-on accessory to a smartphone or tablet for those times when a touchscreen is impractical, here are some considerations to ensure that you get one that’s just right.

Compatibility

Are you a Mac or a PC user? Some keyboards will only work with PC or Mac, so check the compatibility before investing, or opt for a model that covers all operating systems.

Wired or wireless?

Like mice, keyboards can be wired or wireless. Wireless keyboards use RF tech via a receiver plugged into a USB port or can be connected using Bluetooth. The traditional, wired version is ideal for a dedicated desk or fixed study setup; no charging is required.

All quiet

Burning the midnight oil to get an assignment finished on time? You’ll want a quiet operator that won’t distract the household with a flurry of typing. Most keyboards make a bit of noise, but ones that utilise non-mechanical switches will keep it to a minimum.

Game time

Keyboards designed for gaming are generally more robust and include features that you don’t find in a regular keyboard, like RGB backlighting, faster response time, and programmable keys (macros).

Shortcuts

Look for a keyboard with function (FN) keys that control volume, screen brightness, and printing with a simple tap. A numeric keyboard and a built-in USB port are also helpful additions.
