4K Ultra HD releases: What you may have missed in January

There was some seriously hot action on the 4K Ultra HD front in January, from the latest Joker outing to some all-time favourite back catalogue titles debuting on the format in Australia. Let's take a look back, shall we?

Joker: Folie à Deux

This sequel to the smash hit Joker sees failed comedian Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) meet the love of his life in Lee Quinzel (Lady Gaga), while in Arkham State Hospital. Upon their release, the pair embark on a doomed romantic misadventure.

All the dramatic musical mayhem hits 4K Ultra HD in a glorious native 4K transfer that features Dolby Vision and HDR10 enhancement. Audio comes to our ears via the wonders of Dolby Atmos.

Special features number a four part, ~44-minute documentary entitled Everything Must Go, plus four extra featurettes.

Addams Family Values

There’s a new bundle of joy in the Addams house! It’s a joyous occasion – well, for some of the family members…

This dark yet still hilarious sequel to 1991’s The Addams Family makes its way to the 4K Ultra HD format via a native 4K transfer, that’s made all the better for having Dolby Vision and HDR10 enhancement.

The sound comes via DTS-HD Master Audio, while on-disc extras include an audio commentary with director Barry Sonnenfeld and screenwriter Paul Rudnick, plus a featurette.

Galaxy Quest

Never give up, never surrender!

When a race of aliens is under attack, they turn to the only crew out in space that they believe can save them, those of the NSEA Protector. The only problem is that they’re the cast of a TV show, who soon find themselves right in the midst of intergalactic conflict.

This legendary – and loving – star-studded spoof of space TV (especially Star Trek) lands on 4K Ultra HD with a native 4K transfer, boosted by Dolby Vision and HDR10. Dolby Atmos audio rocks, while extras abound, including a new retrospective.

Glory (1989)

Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, and Cary Elwes lead the cast of this triple Oscar winning historical war biography of one of the US Civil War’s first all-African American volunteer companies, who had to fight prejudice from both sides of the conflict.

It makes its way to our screens with a native 4K transfer that features an HDR10 boost, and hits our ears via Dolby Atmos.

A picture-in-picture video commentary features director Edward Zwick and actors Freeman and Broderick.

One Piece Film: Red

One of the most popular manga series to have emanated from Japan is One Piece, and the 15th spin-off movie, One Piece Film: Red – is an animated musical fantasy action adventure.

It brings Monkey D. Luffy and his ragtag crew to 4K Ultra HD via a native 4K transfer with Dolby Vision/HDR10, with the original Japanese soundtrack in Dolby Atmos.

The exclusive steelbook also houses a bonus standard Blu-ray packed with extras.

Roman Holiday

If you’re in the mood for romance, then this classic Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck comedy may be just the ticket, telling the story of a bored and sheltered princess who eludes her royal guardians to explore Rome on her own. Here she meets, and falls for, an American newsman who has his own angle on the entanglement.

The tale unfolds in native 4K, that features both Dolby Vision and HDR10 enhancement.

Meanwhile, authentic audio is delivered via Dolby TrueHD 2.0 Mono.

Stand by Me

Stand by Me is a rite of passage for many, and the tale of a group of teens on an odyssey to find a missing body remains a timeless classic.

It comes to 4K Ultra HD via a native 4K transfer with HDR10, with Dolby Atmos on audio duties.

Extras include around seven minutes of deleted and alternate scenes.

The Quick and the Dead

Sam Raimi gives seriously good western in this tale of a female gunfighter (Sharon Stone) who’s out to avenge her daddy’s death. She returns to the lawless frontier town of Redemption for a deadly duelling contest.

Also starring Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DiCaprio, when it comes to the technical side of things expect a native 4K transfer that’s toting an HDR10 boost.

The audio, meanwhile, comes at us via the wonders of Dolby Atmos. Extras include a selection of deleted scenes.

The Truman Show

Revisit Peter Weir’s masterpiece The Truman Show, which gave us Jim Carrey in a whole new dramatic light, and remains one of his greatest performances.

"When this supposedly ordinary man discovers he’s spent his entire life on camera surrounded by paid actors rather than family and friends, he sets out to find a new and truthful existence... and along the way finds uproarious adventure."

It arrives on 4K Ultra HD delivering native 4K with both Dolby Vision and HRD10, with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.
