Mob Psycho 100 III review: A powerful conclusion to one of anime's greatest series

Studio Bones fires on all cylinders with 'Mob Psycho 100 III', presenting a masterfully crafted final season that packs in some incredible action alongside a gripping and emotional tale about acceptance and humility.

One of the greatest anime series ever made comes to a close with a perfectly told finale that finally resolves the underlying tension at the heart of Mob’s emotional state. Having saved the world from one of the most evil and powerful psychics at the end of the previous series, season three looks inward and sees Mob confidently step into the future.

Always struggling with his own desires and motivations, this final season has Mob constantly reminded of the fact that his future will come. He has to decide what he wants for himself, but the suppression of his powers has put him in a state of emotional inertia.

On top of this time of tumultuous internal development, Mob deals with a gargantuan and supernaturally powered broccoli (don’t worry, it makes sense), a new cult-like religion, aliens, and a new divinity. There's no shortage of action amongst the moments of inner reflection, and it is truly incredible how well the show balances all of the different moving parts.

The humour that the series is known for is also just as strong, if not at its best, with the jokes being some of the funniest seen in an anime. One hilarious moment sees Mob’s ego inflate to epic proportions, and as his ego goes up, his face morphs into an increasingly hyper-masculine caricature. Reigen remains the funniest character in the series though, with every scene he shows up in guaranteed to earn a laugh.

There’s also a remarkable amount of development given to the other characters that occupy Mob’s world. Ritsu becomes the best younger brother anyone could ask for, and the relationship between the brothers comes full circle by the time the final episode comes around.

Reigen, too, has grown from an exploitative conman into a caring one - he truly understands Mob and tries to do right by him and offers some truly touching advice. Even Dimple gets to complete his arc via a completely ridiculous, but no less emotional, scene where both he and Mob find common understanding over a terrible shirt design. Even the body improvement club gets their time to shine.

The animation is as good as the writing, and remains one of the most unique expressions of powers in any anime. The holographic foil style is bright and colourful, and each person with psychic powers gets a unique look that really shows off just how creative the team at Studio Bones truly is.

Action scenes hit hard and fast, but it remains easy to follow what's going on. Every moment in this season is delivered perfectly across the board, elevating it to the highest form (it's hard to think of an anime as good).

No stone feels unturned, with everything wrapped up in a highly emotional finale that allows Mob to finally be the man he wants to be. The fights are intense, both visually and emotionally, thanks to the well-written cast that makes it impossible not to care about them.

Mob Psycho 100 III is one of the best animated series, hands down, and it delivers a truly unforgettable finale that ties everything together. It might be one of the greatest endings ever created.
