Lasagna-chugging, Monday-hating feline Garfield is returning to the movies in a new animated feature based on the much-loved comic strip.
If you're a fan of said cartoon, you'll know that Garfield's dad hasn't previously featured in any incarnation of the Garfield story, so he's a brand-new creation for this movie from Sony Pictures Animation.
Samuel L. Jackson’s Vic joins serial animated voice Chris Pratt (he was Emmet in the pair of LEGO Movies and voiced Mario in Illumination's The Super Mario Brothers Movie) as the titular feline in the cast, alongside Nicholas Hoult, Ving Rhames, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Bowen Yang, and a mini Ted Lasso reunion in Hannah Waddingham and Brett ‘Roy Kent’ Goldstein.
The story is set to go like this: “After an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father – scruffy street cat Vic – Garfield and his canine friend Odie are forced from their perfectly pampered life into joining Vic in a hilarious, high-stakes heist.”
You may or may not remember that there have been two previous Garfield movies, live-action capers featuring Bill Murray as the voice of the titular feline. They, well, weren't great. We’re hoping that keeping this one animated will help make for a better experience, as there's plenty of fun material to mine.
Here’s our first taste of The Garfield Movie via a rather cute trailer. With a tagline of "the weight is over" (yep, they're fat-shaming a cartoon cat!), the entire shebang is scheduled to hit Australian cinemas on May 30, 2024.
It's Garfield time!
