Billy Ocean: When the going gets tough, the tough get to Australia!

Jeff Jenkins

STACK Writer

Billy Ocean is returning to Australia. The UK star’s One World Tour will hit Australia in September.

The tour follows the 40th anniversary release of his classic Suddenly album, which features the smash hit Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run), which soared to number two on the Australian charts.

Fun fact: Caribbean Queen was initially released as European Queen. But when the single stiffed, Ocean changed the title. "I guess it had more appeal as Caribbean Queen because Europe conjures up a vision of rain and snow and cold, but Caribbean sounds like sunshine and blue skies. It’s much more exotic."

Here are three more things that you may not know about Billy Ocean:

1. He was born Leslie Charles in Trinidad and Tobago.

2. He says he took his stage name from a football team in his hometown in Trinidad and Tobago who called themselves Oceans 11.

3. He’s a Grammy winner – Caribbean Queen won 'Best Male R&B Vocal Performance'.

The Billy Ocean hits started nearly 50 years ago – his breakthrough single, Love Really Hurts Without You, cracked the Australian Top 5 in 1976.

The list of Ocean songs also features two Aussie chart-toppers: 1986’s When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going and 1988’s Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car.

When the Going Gets Tough was featured in the movie The Jewel of the Nile, and the music video featured the stars of the film – Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito.

As well as all those poptastic hits, a Billy Ocean show needs to come with the warning: There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)

"I’m thrilled to get back to Australia," Ocean says. "Every time I come there I’m welcomed with open arms."

And we couldn’t help but notice that Ocean will be here in Grand Final week. If the AFL insists on having an international act, they need to look no further. Billy Ocean’s pop hits would light up the MCG.
