First impressions
Straight from the box you know you’ve got your hands on a high quality pair of earbuds. The Momentum True Wireless 4s are housed in a classy looking, fabric-coated charging case, sport a similar design to the Momentum TW 3s, and are available in three striking colours to suit your style: black copper, black graphite and white silver.
Simple set up and pairing
Once you’ve connected to Bluetooth and completed the guided set-up via the Sennheiser Smart Control app, the buds will automatically pair when you plug them into your ears.
How do they sound?
The rich and immersive soundscape of Sennheiser’s Momentum 4 headphones got top marks from us, and their earbud sibling sounds every bit as good. So good, in fact, you might think you’re wearing over-ear cans and not buds.
The comfy and secure fit keeps the music in, with balanced sound all round and fantastic stereo separation. The mid-range is excellent, the bass punchy, and vocals clearly defined – the latter particularly evident when listening to music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is a go-to track when giving new ear gear a thorough workout, traversing several music genres in the one song – ballad, opera and hard rock – and filled with layered guitar riffs and stacked vocals. When pumped through the Momentum TW 4 buds, the distinct separation of music elements was outstanding and once again close to headphone quality.
Noises off
Adaptive noise cancelling takes away the hassle of adjusting the level of block out each time you move to a different environment. The buds’ ANC detects the level of racket around you and auto adjusts for set-and-forget convenience. You can also set your preferred levels in the Smart Control app.
Transparency mode lets the outside world in with exceptional clarity, and is also adjustable from low, mid to high in the app via a handy slider.
Crystal clear calls
The earbuds’ six-microphone system maintains consistently clear call quality, while the intuitive ANC cuts any background chatter or noise and isolates your voice.
The buds also support multi-point pairing for auto-switching between devices when a call comes in – convenient when you’re watching a movie on your laptop with the buds in.
Customisable touch controls
Which bud controls what function can often take a bit of getting used to at first, but with the Momentum TW 4s you can customise the touch controls to your liking, with the exception of Accept/Mute and Reject/End for calls.
Otherwise, the presets are pretty simple – the left bud controls transparency, ANC and skip back, while the right is where you’ll find play/pause, volume, skip track, and voice assistant activation (Siri or Google).
Smart control
The Sennheiser Smart Control app is where you’ll find everything you need to personalise your listening.
There’s a 5-band EQ for tweaking when needed, and a handy feature that lets you set up individual Sound Zones (home, office, gym, park, etc) for auto optimisation of ANC and EQ settings, which deactivate when you’ve left the selected zone.
You can also run a ‘Fit Test’ that lets you personalise audio elements like strings, bass and volume, transparency and more.
How long will the battery last?
A full charge will give you up to 7.5 hours of play time with ANC off, which can be extended to 30 hours with the charging case, and a quick eight-minute charge will deliver an hour of play when you’re caught short. We got all-day continuous play without needing to top up!
Future-proofed
As well as packing cutting-edge audio tech, the Momentum TW 4 earbuds also support new wireless technologies like Bluetooth LE Audio (via a firmware update) for improved sound quality, and Auracast for sharing audio from a transmitting device (like a phone, laptop or TV) with compatible receiving devices around you (earbuds or headphones) – perfect for group listening and watch parties!
