How Better Man and 5 other musical biopics dare to be different

The new Robbie Williams biopic, 'Better Man', is undoubtedly one of the most unconventional takes on a musical career we’ve seen - after all, he’s a monkey in it!
As bizarre as it sounds, there’s a method to the madness, and it all makes sense in context. It also got us thinking about other musical biopics that break from convention to elevate their stories. Here are five more that do just that.

Rocketman (2019)
The 2019 Elton John biopic Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton, blurs the line between reality and fantasy.
More than just a life story, the film seamlessly shifts between realism and surrealism, with bold musical spectacles capturing the essence of Elton John.
The result is a kaleidoscopic extravaganza befitting one of pop culture’s most flamboyant and polarising figures. Above all, it’s a great film.

Elvis (2022)
Aussie director Baz Luhrmann brings his signature flair to the story of Elvis Presley, blending classic blues and rock with modern pop for a fresh, explosive take on The King’s life.
More than just a nostalgic tribute, Luhrmann infuses the film with highly stylised musical sequences and frenetic editing, capturing the energy and charisma of one of music’s most iconic figures.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
The title says it all. A biopic befitting a professional goofball.
The wildly inaccurate life story of comedic singer-songwriter (and all-around legend) Weird Al Yankovic unfolds in this delightfully absurd biopic.
True to Weird Al’s spirit, the film delivers a fanciful, loony, and completely over-the-top version of his life - the way he’d rather it be told.
The result is a hysterical, infectious musical romp that’s impossible to turn off.

Amadeus (1984)
Often cited as one of the greatest films of all time, Amadeus presents the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through the envious eyes of his rival, Antonio Salieri.
What sets it apart is its blend of historical fact and dramatic fiction, crafting a compelling narrative of genius, jealousy, and obsession.
With its epic production design, lavish costumes, breathtaking musical sequences, and Tom Hulce’s wildly eccentric performance, Amadeus is an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Love & Mercy (2014)
The story of Beach Boys singer-songwriter Brian Wilson comes to life in this unconventional biopic, with Paul Dano and John Cusack portraying Wilson at different stages of his life.
What makes Love & Mercy unique is its nonlinear narrative and dreamlike quality - not to mention Cusack’s brilliant performance, despite bearing little physical resemblance to Wilson.
Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his music, Love & Mercy stands among the greatest music biopics, earning widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences.
