Bon Iver: Is Bon, is good!

Bon Iver tell a few fables on their fifth album.

Bon Iver’s new album started out as three-song EP called SABLE. It has now grown into a full album called SABLE fABLE.

The band explains: “SABLE was the prologue, a controlled burn clearing the way for new possibilities. fABLE is the book. Stories of introduction and celebration. The fresh growth that blankets the charred ground. Where SABLE was a work of solitude, fABLE is an outstretched hand... it’s a love story about how one becomes two, two people that come together.”

The album includes a song called Awards Season, and the band is no stranger to awards. They won ‘Best New Artist’ at the Grammys. And their self-titled second album won ‘Best Alternative Music Album’.

The album also features If Only I Could Wait, a duet with Haim lead singer Danielle Haim.

Bon Iver was initially a solo project for Justin Vernon. It’s now a band, but the songs remain deeply personal. Vernon explains that “sable” implies darkness.

I’m a sable,” he sings in the closing cut. “And honey, us the fable.”

If you’re wondering, “Bon Iver” comes from the French phrase “bon hiver”, meaning “good winter”. It was a greeting in the ’90s TV series Northern Exposure.

SABLE fABLE by Bon Iver is out April 11 via Rocket.
