Three reasons to have USB-C connectivity in your next monitor
An HDMI monitor input is standard. However, USB-C has many advantages, and is fast becoming the preferred choice for laptop to monitor connections. Choosing a monitor with USB-C and HDMI ports won’t set you back much more than choosing an HDMI-only monitor.
The USB Type-A port we’re all familiar with was intended mainly for connecting peripherals, such as external storage, a wired mouse, or a printer. USB-C has been conceived with much greater ambition - to be a single-cable solution for audio/video, data, and power delivery. If you have a laptop and monitor equipped with USB-C compatibility, here’s how things just got better:
1 Ditch your dedicated laptop charger. Connect to a monitor that features USB-C power delivery, and it will charge your device at the same time. Currently, USB-C can provide data transfer of ten gigabytes per second, and up to 100W power delivery. So, no more messy charging, or chunky HDMI cable.
2 Easy plug and play. Unlike USB-A which can’t be inserted if it’s upside down, the slim and symmetrical design of the USB-C receptacle has been designed to correctly pair no matter how it’s plugged in.
3 Future proof. The European Union has mandated that by the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold in its common market will come with USB-C charging ports, with laptops to follow by 2026. This will encourage wide adoption worldwide. Latest standards for USB-C data and power delivery are up to 80 Gbps and 240W respectively, so there's plenty of growth in use case ahead.
