5 foods that truly taste better when cooked in an air fryer

James O’Connor

There are two types of people: those who swear by their air fryer, and those who haven't used one yet. Tasting is believing – you can get a crispy fried flavour while using much less oil. Here are five foods that we always air fry for a taste sensation!

Chicken wings

Cooking crispy chicken wings at home without an air fryer is a pain – frying them in oil is messy, cooking them in the oven doesn't quite give the right flavour, and wings are really only worth it if they're done well.

Having an air fryer feels like easy mode for making great wings. The skin crisps up, your seasoning locks in, and if you toss them in hot sauce afterwards (or a Korean style gochujang paste if you want to really treat yourself) they're better, and much cheaper and healthier, than the wings at your local pub.

Meatballs

Getting an even cook over a meatball in a pan can be very difficult, and oven baked meatballs tend to dry out and lose flavour. But an air fryer can make meatballs that would make Gordon Ramsay blush.

Mixing together your mince, egg, breadcrumbs, and seasoning into balls and then cooking them in your air fryer for as little as ten minutes will yield beautiful, juicy results.

They're great on top of pasta, in a sandwich, or just served on a bed of rice, potato, or polenta.

Chickpeas

Chickpeas are a much more versatile legume than many people realise. They work in a salad, they're great when you smash them up into hummus, but they're also much better on their own than you might expect.

Drain a can of chickpeas and mix them with salt, paprika, and other spices that you have on hand. Spray with a little olive oil, and then put in the air fryer at 200°C for about 13 minutes. Voila! You've got a delicious, cheap, healthy, shareable snack.

Salmon

Two words: crispy skin. The holy grail of good salmon is a snappy, beautiful skin on top, and an air fryer lets you live this dream.

Once the salmon is cooked to perfection – which takes just a few minutes – you can continue to cook it, giving the skin that satisfying crunchiness.

In fact, air fryers are great for a lot of seafood meals – prawns, salt and pepper squid, and even the humble fish finger come out of an air fryer tasting delicious.

All things potato

It's hard to narrow it down to just one thing. Chips? Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, without needing to use a lot of oil. Tater tots and hash browns and home fries? Perfection in minutes.

Roasted potatoes are golden and crispy and cook fast, and you can even make a baked potato without needing to use the oven.

Sweet potato is great, too – cut it into wedges and you're in for a treat. The only thing you can't do is mashed potato, but who's picking mash over chips anyway?
